And managing director Rico Liverani says he would like to see more companies consider taking advantage of premises within Sunderland.
The company, which handles the payrolls of hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses has been forced to seek new accommodation after outgrowing Mowbray Villas on Mowbray Road, where it has been based since 2003.
It services more than 500 companies, locally, regionally and nationally, and with clients on the increase, it has just relocated to Hylton Road and the three-story building formerly occupied by the Red Cross near the Willow Pond pub.
And Rico says more companies might want to think about taking advantage of available properties in Sunderland city centre and its surrounds for the convenience and good value they offer.
He told the Echo:“I know the trend these days is to move to vast out-of-town industrial parks and we looked at that but then we discovered that Sunderland has loads of properties to offer.
“This one on Hylton Road was perfect for our needs, very reasonably priced – as is a lot of the market for rent or purchase – and you have the fact that there’s a Metro station nearby, you’re on a big main road and the city centre is five minutes away.
“The move was forced on us because more and more companies are outsourcing their payroll departments to us and many new startups are also coming to us, with payroll regulation getting ever more technical.
“So we knew we had to leave Mowbray Villas but are delighted to have been able to make the right move for the business yet still stayed local and in the community.”
Rico also took advantage of local suppliers from a networking group which meets at the Wessington Way pub, to ensure he gave his business to companies operating within the area.
Painting and decorating – from Linda Lewis at Decorelle, electrical work – from Colin Downie at CD Electrical Services, design and signage – from Mick Shotton of Essential Design and Brian Green of Aztec Colour Print,and purchase, by Jack Morrow of Eye to Eye mortgage brokers, were all sourced from local firms.
“Through our work in payroll we know that there are hundreds of small businesses out there on Wearside working hard to provide good service and we were delighted to make use of that,” he said.
“The premises now look great and we can cope with further expansion which is certain to come because Government rules are making payroll more and more of a specialist subject.
“Recent legislation on things like RTI – real time information, and GDPR – data protection, are making things a lot more difficult for firms to keep track of.
“And then there’s the subject of cyber safety which has been making the headlines.
“We’ve recently earned a Cyber Essentials certificate, which is an audit of good practice, make sure you’re doing the right thing, offering protection from criminals – and that is something which is set to become increasingly important.
“We can accommodate future growth though from within our new building, which shows that expanding companies can sometimes still have all their needs met without having to move out of the community.”
